About Us

Matumaini is determined to make a difference in the lives of underprivileged families in Kenya. The word "Matumaini," which means hope in Swahili, the local language of Kenya, serves as a powerful reminder of the foundation's commitment to uplifting the lives of children in the region. Together, we have embarked on a mission to transform the futures of these young hearts by providing them with the gift of education. Matumaini firmly believes that education is the key to changing a child's future and creating a safe space for these children.

How Our Journey Began

As we, Fernanda and Maria Jose, the founders of Matumaini Kenya, were on our way to volunteer at a local school in Nairobi, Kenya, we encountered numerous kids leaving school early in the morning. Among these students was Hope Tania, a young girl who shared, "I have been sent home because I cannot pay my school fees." This simple moment fueled our passion to make a difference. We began spreading the word about the urgent need to keep the students at school. After all, school isn't just a place to learn; it's their safe space, source of joy, and, for some, their only access to meals. As the word spread quickly, our community stepped up, and donations poured in, covering the debts of all 420 students at the school. This allowed no child to be sent home for the rest of the term! Because of this, we wanted to create a foundation that would serve as a pillar of hope, reaching out to children like Hope Tania and offering them the chance to learn and play without the worry of being sent home due to a lack of financial resources. And so, the foundation "Matumaini," which means Hope, came to life. Its name, thoughtfully chosen to honor Hope Tania, embodies the very essence of its mission - instilling hope in the hearts of young learners, empowering them with education, and nourishing a safe space for them to grow.
